How To Green Clean Your Carpet

We all love to come home to a clean carpet….to kick off our shoes and feel that softness under our feet. Not so wonderful, however, if it is dull, stained or if it has picked up a nasty smell.

When it's time to clean your carpet, there are some decisions to make about what products to use. It is no longer necessary to treat a problem carpet with harsh chemicals. Carpets can be cleaned naturally, and effectively, without any chemicals.

Try Real Natural Flower Power for all your carpet cleaning needs.

Follow these five easy steps.

Step 1: Most important - Choose non-toxic planet friendly carpet cleaning products. Real Natural Flower Power offers a healthy selection of three 100% natural products for all of your green carpet cleaning needs – Super Concentrated Carpet Cleaner, Carpet & Upholstery Stain Remover, and a deodorizing Carpet Booster for deep stain removal.

Step 2: Thoroughly vacuum the carpet to remove all particulate and dirt. Make sure to vacuum everywhere, under furniture and around all the edges of the room.

Remember: Water + Dirt = Mud so removing the particulate with a good vacuum is key.

Step 3: Apply a carpet pre-spray such as Real Natural Flower Power Carpet Stain Remover. Pre-spray is effective for removing stains and the dullness from heavy traffic areas. Spritz the entire area lightly with the pre-spray, and spray more on stained areas. If you do not own a carpet extractor, blot the stains with an absorbent microfiber cloth. It acts like a sponge to pull the stain out of the carpet.

Optional: Carpet Deodorizing and Deep Stain Removal. Use Real Natural Flower Power Carpet Booster powder for those set in stains. Sprinkle Carpet Booster powder evenly onto carpet (only 1-3 tablespoons) and vacuum up when Carpet is dry. You may need to allow time to dissolve the stain (5-30 minute dwell time depending on the age and depth of the stain). For deeper deodorizing and stain removal, work the Carpet Booster into your carpet with a Daisy Carpet brush (available at Mister Sweeper Vacuums www.MisterSweeperVacuums.com). Use the dark blue side for standard carpets, and use the light blue side for delicate rugs and Berber carpet.

Step 4: Now, you are ready to deep clean your carpet. Bring out your carpet extractor unit or rent a unit for the day. These carpet cleaning machines inject hot water and a cleaning agent into the carpet before suctioning them back up with a powerful vacuum.

Pour hot water into the unit. Then add Real Natural Flower Power Concentrated Carpet Cleaner, a highly concentrated natural product that is specially designed for carpet cleaning machines. Start up the machine and go.

Further Details

Real Natural Flower Power Mixing instructions: Add ¾ oz. of Flower Power Carpet cleaner per gallon of water. At this concentration there should be no residue left on the carpets and rinsing is not necessary. Avoid using more product than recommended to prevent any residue.

Most cleaners use 2oz. per Gallon of water. Real Natural Flower Power is Super Concentrated as you only use ¾ oz. per Gallon so if you own your own a residential Carpet Cleaner such as the Bissell ProHeat or Hoover Platinum Extractor, you may have to add 50% water to the Solution Only tank to achieve the right mixture.

For best results: Go over carpets once in an East to West direction, overlapping by an inch. Then repeat this process in a North to South direction until you have covered the entire area.

Note: If you have used the Booster effectively, your previously stained portions of carpet may have returned closer to their original state. However, depending on the look of the rest of your carpet, these may show up as “clean spots.” To ensure a consistent colouring and cleanliness of your carpet, you will need to apply the Booster evenly across your carpet. Take the Carpet Booster and evenly distribute across your carpet and work it in with the Daisy Brush. Repeat one more pass with the carpet extractor unit.

Important: If your carpets take longer than four hours to dry there is something wrong. Either you are applying too much cleaner to the carpet, wetting the underlay or your vacuum pressure is not enough to draw out enough moisture. Look to upgrade your unit if that is the case. Environmental Fact: Household Chemicals
Did you Know?

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the air inside the typical home is on average 2-5 times more polluted than the air just outside—and in extreme cases 100 times more contaminated—largely because of household cleaners and pesticides.

We use the cleaning solution by Real Natural Flower Power, so you don't have to worry about polluting the environment or harming your children and pets.

Environmental Fact: Household Chemicals
Continuous Exposure is a Major Risk
The health danger associated with the use of toxic products is not just the initial exposure, but also the cumulative effects of continuous exposures, which weakens our immune systems. Indoor air pollution is a huge health issue. According to the U.S. EPA, this year some 11,420 people will die from indoor air pollution. Millions more will be sickened by their exposure to a host of toxic chemicals within their homes and offices.

Environmental Fact: Household Chemicals
Many household cleaners contain chlorine, though it often masquerades behind aliases such as "sodium hypochlorite" or "hypochlorite." Breathing in the fumes of cleaners containing a high concentration of chlorine can irritate the lungs. This is particularly dangerous for people suffering from heart conditions or chronic respiratory problems such as asthma or emphysema.

Environmental Fact: Household Chemicals
The average household contains anywhere from 3-25 gallons of toxic materials, most of which are in cleaners.

Environmental Fact: Household Chemicals
Using commercial cleaning products is probably one of the worst things that you can do for your family's health due to the resulting indoor air pollution, in addition to the chemical residue left on your counters and surfaces. Did you know that nearly 80% of the chemicals found in everyday cleaning products have not been tested for long-term effects? By using these products, you may very well have a clean house today, and possible cancer in the future.

Environmental Fact: Household Chemicals
There are literally thousands of house cleaning products on the market today, all claiming to kill 99.9% of germs or bacteria or whatever. In theory, this is great; however in reality, these products kill germs because they themselves are toxic chemicals that will basically kill anything.

Environmental Fact: Household Chemicals
Most carpet cleaning formulas using chemicals are designed to over power the stain itself; they accomplish the task but not without using highly toxic substances. Some include perchlorethylene, a known carcinogen that damages liver, kidney and nervous system damage; and ammonium hydroxide, a corrosive, extremely irritable to eyes, skin and respiratory passages.

Environmental Fact: Household Chemicals
One million poisonings in Canada each year are due to household cleaner ingestion. Some are fatal. Thousands of children and adults are permanently disfigured or injured through contact with chemicals in the home each year.

Environmental Fact: Household Chemicals
Homeowners use up to 10 times more toxic chemicals per acre than farmers.

Environmental Fact: Household Chemicals
Over 100 pesticide ingredients are suspected to cause birth defects, cancer, and gene mutations.
